Holiday cards for soldiers

UGA student-athletes signed 226 cards for troops stationed at Fort Knox Kentucky. These troops will soon deploy for overseas assignments. Thanks for making the holidays brighter for these individuals!

Message from Athens Area Homeless Shelter

From McKenzy Bailey, Volunteer Manager at the Athens Area Homeless Shelter:

As a valued volunteer of Athens Area Homeless Shelter, I would like to thank you for the support that you have given to the shelter throughout the year! Because of you, we are meeting the needs of homeless families and they are achieving success in gaining stability in employment and housing.

Reported by the Independent Sector, the estimated dollar value for volunteer time is $20.85 per hour; that means every month volunteers at the Athens Area Homeless Shelter donated approximately $4,670.40 in your time through different opportunities. For 2010, that totals to more than $56,000 in hours of service for our shelter!

The gift of your time is invaluable to our residents and their families. There is not a monetary value equal to the support that you have given to our families in their journey towards stability.

This holiday season, I send my sincere gratitude for your time and continued partnership with Athens Area Homeless Shelter.

Shoe donations

I thought I would pass along this opportunity since several of you have indicated you have an abundance of footwear! Happy holidays!

With the holiday season fast approaching, the UGA Department of Recreational Sports would like to remind you that the ongoing shoe recycling program entitled, "If the Shoes Fit", is looking for 3,000 pairs of donated shoes. Started in 2008, this program takes new or used but still good shoes and places them back into the greater Athens Clarke County community. The program will accept all sizes and kinds of shoes but does not accept sandals, flip flops or Crocs. If you are interested in donating shoes, please feel free to visit the Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities during any of the building's regularly scheduled hours. There are two 55 gallon plastic barrels in a corner of the lobby where you can place your shoes. Through the year, the program has donated shoes to the Athens Area Homeless Shelter, Project Safe and Soles4Souls. The Department of Rec Sports would like to donate 1,000 pairs of shoes annually.

Please contact Mitch Gartenberg, megarten@uga.edu, if you have any questions.
